Sad Passing of a fellow Collegian

- 20 September 2011

Our good friend and fellow Collegian, Ian Cole (Farmer), passed away recently.

Those who will recall Farmer will remember him as an outstanding player, true Collegian and all-round nice guy.

Of a far earlier vintage, Dave Fowler another Collegian that sadly passed away, I am told a couple of weeks ago – our best wishes go out to the respective families.

As Porky says – “this is the best planet I have ever lived on”  – let’s enjoy while we can.

Ian Cole played wing and fullback for the Collegians 1st team for  many a year during the mid 70s the same era as Tim Cocks, Stan Holmes, Tubby Hannefofrd, Wakka Basson etc. He was also an above average goal kicker.

The Cole family had a chicken farm in Highflats Area and Ian and his brother would travel great distances to practice and matches.

At the end of a season they hosted the 1st team squad to a braai on their farm.
In one of our team photos of the Toyota  National Club Tournament, Ian appears with the names mentioned. Ian was coached by Trix Truter, managed by Syd Warner, and the Liaison officer was Keith Parkinson.

Ian was a dedicated supporter of Collegians, carring all the costs to play for Collegians himself.

R.I.P. Owen Clarkson

- 21 February 2011

Acer Durban Collegians are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Owen Clarkson who played for Collegians in the early 50’s before being chosen to represent Natal in 1952. The son of the legendary Springbok centre Wally Clarkson was educated at Kearsney College and was always on hand at the Collegians rugby dinners to hand out the Wally Clarkson Award a trophy named after his father. Clarkson senior a product of Maritzburg College who was heavily involved in the now famous annual Old Crocks game against the Kearsney First XV in the early years was reported to have been so impressed with the school that he decided to send Owen there rather than to his old school in Pietermaritzburg. The President and members of the KZNRU, Acer Durban Collegians, and all the clubs concerned send condolences to the Clarkson family on their sad loss.

Is this the longest drop goal ever?

- 11 May 2010

Francois Steyn has a reputation as having the biggest boot in world rugby and he lived up to that billing with an extraordinary drop goal in Friday's Top 14 play-off match between Racing Metro and Clermont.

With his side 14-12 ahead and aiming for a place in the semi-finals of France's domestic championship, the South African World Cup winner unleashed a drop goal from fully 60 metres away.
Not only did it clear the posts, it would have been good from another 20 metres.
Sadly for Steyn, who earns an estimated €750,000 per season with the Paris-based club, his team eventually lost the match 21-17.

During a Super 14 match against the Brumbies with his former South African franchise, The Sharks, Steyn kicked the ball almost 100m and in the Springboks' final match of the 2009 Tri Nations against New Zealand, he converted three penalties from within his own half.
Check out the extraordinary drop goal:
